SB0123-41299r.jpg

This specimen was lot 41299 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1735-IAB. Zellerfeld Mint. Ferdinand Albrecht II. PCGS AU-53. One year type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735 only during the very short reign of duke Ferdinand Albrecht II and is fairly common. Other thalers included Dav-2138 (Ludwig Rudolf wild man), Dav-2139 (Ludwig Rudolf leaping stallion), Dav-2140 (Ludwig Rudolf bust obverse), Dav-2141 (death of Ludwig Rudolf), Dav-2142 (Ferdinand Albrecht, leaping stallion), Dav-2144 (death of Ferdinand Albrecht), Dav-2145 (Karl I wild man) and Dav-2146 (Karl I leaping stallion). Altho not cheap, Dav-2143 is probably the most available thaler for 1735.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2143; KM-881; Welter-2673.
