Künker sale 354, lot 5203

This specimen was lot 5203 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$11,134 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Ludwig Rudolf, 1731-1735, seit 1714 in Blankenburg. Dukat 1735, Braunschweig, auf seinen Tod am 1. März. Büste r.//Sieben Zeilen Schrift, darunter drei Rosetten und die Signatur · B · I · D · (Bernhard Julius Dedekind, Münzmeister in Braunschweig 1732-1742). GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 42, Osnabrück 1998, Nr. 3846. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Louis Rudolf, 1731-35 (duke in Blankenburg since 1714), ducat of 1735, Brunswick mint, on his death on March 1. Obverse: bust right; reverse: seven line inscription, below three rosettes and mintmaster's initials. Extremely rare, extremely fine.)"

August William was succeeded by his brother Ludwig Rudolf in 1731 and Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel and Brunswick-Blankenburg were merged once again. This rare ducat was issued on Ludwig's death.
