Künker sale 406, lot 3982

This specimen was lot 3982 in Künker sale 406 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,887 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, Ludwig Rudolf, 1731-1735, seit 1714 in Blankenburg. Dukat 1733, Braunschweig. In US-Plastikholder der PCGS mit der Bewertung AU 55 (45510197). GOLD. R Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, Louis Rudolf, 1733-35 (since 1714 in Blankenburg), ducat of 1733, Brunswick mint. Graded PCGS AU-55, rare, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The duke issued nine different ducats in 1733, all scarce: KM 823, KM 828, KM 839, KM 840, KM 841, KM 842, KM 843, KM 844 (shown here) and KM 845. The "Wild man", popular on North German thalers, did not often appear on ducats.
