Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1914, with Blankenburg to the south

This specimen was lot 30193 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 2 Ducats, 1732-D BID. Brunswick Mint. Ludwig Rudolph. PCGS MS-62. A VERY RARE issue, especially this elegant and problem-free, the present example offers a great deal of shimmering luster as well as a well-executed strike. Undoubtedly a piece that should generate great enthusiasm among the advanced collectors of world gold in general or those of the "wildmen" specifically. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This scarce type is listed for 1732-33 only. The wild man appears on many series of North German thalers but not so often on gold coins. Here, the wild man supports the ducal arms. The duke of Brunswick-Blankenburg succeeded to Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1731 and merged the two duchies, ending the -Blankenburg series.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.98 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 6.90 g.

Catalog reference: Fr-682; KM-824; Welter-2425.
