Aureo sale 261, lot 752
Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1914, with Blankenburg to the south

This specimen was lot 752 in Aureo sale 261 (Barcelona, July 2014), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,765 with buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1725. Alemania. Brunswick-Blakenburg. Luis Rodolfo. HCH. 1 taler. Fecha en números romanos. Bella. Brillo original. Pátina. Rara. EBC+. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Blankenburg, Louis Rudolf, silver thaler of 1725, Roman numeral date. handsome, original luster, toned, rare, choice extremely fine.)"

This duchy was a short-lived branch of Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel, wherein we have filed it. The duke succeeded to Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1731 and merged the two duchies, ending the -Blankenburg series. This thaler was struck 1715-27 and is the only coin from that locale that is not extremely rare. A prior Brunswick-Blankenburg, which fell extinct in 1599, was an unrelated dynasty.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 29 g, silver, 42 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 7; Dav-2133.
