Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1736-IAB thaler Dav-2145
This specimen was lot 73523 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. Taler, 1736-IAB. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Despite the noted light cleaning, this coin offers very pleasing argent surfaces mellowed by time and a thin layer of champagne which grows more prominent at the periphery. Design devices and lettering are well-detailed with great clarity. A very attractive example of this type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection. Ex: Dr. Busso Peus Nachfolger 312 (November 1984), lot #2463 (with ticket)." This thaler was struck 1735-50, 1755, 1758-53 and 1775 and is quite scarce but is more available than the accompanying thaler with the leaping stallion reverse (Dav-2146).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
