This specimen was lot 55543 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 12 Mariengroschen, 1736-IAB. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-55. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 for Karl I and is common. Twelve mariengroschen made one-third of a thaler or half a gulden. All of the twelve mariengroschen struck by this duke used the "wild man" design; the "leaping stallion" only appeared on one-third thalers starting in 1764.
