Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73270

This specimen was lot 73270 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $216. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 2 Mariengroschen, 1736-IAB. Karl I. PCGS MS-61. An attractive little minor with little signs of every being handled, which is quite impressive being nearly 300 years old." This denomination was one twelfth of a thaler. This type was struck 1735-52, 1755-57, 1762, 1765, 1770, 1780 and is common. Mintmaster IAB appears 1731-38. The denomination was also struck with a "leaping stallion" reverse (KM 860) but not in 1736.
