Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction, lot 71011
SB626-71011r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71011 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $1,220. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Ecu, 1791-R. Orleans Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS AU-50. Some adjustment marks are noted on the obverse, but this example otherwise remains without much in the way of actual handling, with a very low mintage and alluring brilliance. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired in 2008 for $1,114)." This écu au buste habillé was struck at the Orléans mint 1775-77, 1780-91. This is a rare date and the Orléans mint is usually scarce mint; however, the 1783-87 and 1789 are common.

Recorded mintage: 8,740, a rare date[2].

Specification: silver, 11 deniers (.917 fine), 8.3 pieces to the mark (29.488 g), face value 6 livres, 39 mm diameter. Engraved by Benjamin Duvivier; this specimen 29,34 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 883, Dr/2 № 616, Dav-1333, Dupl-1708; KM-564.14; Gad-356 (R2).
