Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 43024
SB825-43024r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43024 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Ecu, 1790-N. Montpellier Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS MS-62. A SCARCER type, this nearly-Choice crown from the antepenultimate year of issue features deep gunmetal gray toning and stands as the only such representative for the date and mint in the PCGS census. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Coin Galleries in 1984 for $275). Ex: Coin Galleries (11/1984) Lot # 970." This specimen is an écu au buste habillé struck at the Montpellier mint, one of a type struck there 1775-91. Its divisions were the ½, 1/5, 1/10 and 1/20 écu, struck in modest quantities. The écu was worth $1.10 in the USA before the Civil War. The écu au buste habillé is a popular coin of Louis XVI among collectors. Most of the mints were in small towns, operated to provide patronage for local politicians. In silver, Bayonne, Paris and Pau predominated. France has little bullion ore within its boundaries, so most of the silver came from melted foreign coin, especially Spanish. The gold to silver ratio in France was 14.5:1, favoring silver.

Recorded mintage: 223,129, a somewhat scarce date.

Specification: 29.49 g, 0.917 fine silver, 39 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 883, Dav-1333; KM-564.12; Gad-356 (R).
