This specimen was lot 71001 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. 2 Louis d'Or, 1790-BB. Strasbourg Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details. A SCARCER issue, this specimen has had some prior cleaning, but remains without any evidence of circulation, and offers some pleasing brilliance a straw-yellow hues throughout. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Alain Weil in 1995 for $1,947). Ex: Alain Weil (10/1995) Lot # 527." A fairly scarce double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Strasbourg mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the French mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Specification: 15.29 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.
