Sincona sale 97, lot 1496

This specimen was lot 1496 in SINCONA Auction 97 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 650 CHF (about US$943 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH Königreich, Louis XVI. 1774-1792. Louis d'or à la tête nue 1790 I, Limoges. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Leicht justiert. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-92, gold louis of the bare head of 1790, Limoges mint. Very Fine-Extremely Fine, Minor adjustment marks.)"

The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 8,686, a scarce date[2].

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier, this specimen 7.61 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 881, Dr/2 № 605, KM 591.7, Gadoury 361, Fr-475.
