SB825-43007r.jpg

This specimen was lot 43007 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. 2 Louis d'Or, 1790-Q (9/8). Perpignan Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS MS-61. Featuring some faint evidence of an "8" below the "9" in the date, this Mint State specimen glistens with an exceptional array of dazzling brilliance. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Jean Vinchon in Paris on 5 February 1998 for $808)." This is a scarce double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Toulouse mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer. This is the only issue from Perpignan.

Recorded mintage: 2,944.

Specification: 15.29 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 877, Dr/2 № 604, Fr-474; KM-592.12; Gad-363 (R4).
