Sincona sale 38, lot 1311

This specimen was lot 1311 in Sincona sale 38 (Zürich, May 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Louis XVI. 1774-1792 2 Louis d`or au buste nu 1789 K. Bordeaux. Sehr schön. Leicht gereinigt. (kingdom of France, Louis XVI, 1774-92, gold double louis of the bare bust of 1789, Bordeaux mint. Very fine. Minor cleaning.)"

A fairly common double louis d'or à la tête nue from the Bordeaux mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 2,641,702 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the French mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 23,418 (actual mintage estimated to be ten times higher)[1].

Specification: 15.29 g, 0.917 fine gold, 28 mm diameter, .451 troy oz AGW, designed by Benjamin Duvivier. This specimen is 15.20 g.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 877, Dr/2 № 604, Duplessy 1706; Fr-474; KM-529.8; Gad-363.
