France 1789-Q ecu
This specimen was lot 40282 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[2] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1789-Q. Perpignan Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS MS-65 Gold Shield. The sole finest certified of the mint for this type on either the NGC or PCGS population reports. This fabulous looking Gem offers frosty bold devices with smooth satiny lustrous surfaces displaying a lovely smokey light gray tone that is complemented by richer coloration in the protected areas of the legends. A fabulous representative of the type that seldom appears on the market in this elite state of preservation destined for a fine cabinet of a discerning collector." This specimen is an écu au buste habillé struck at the Perpignan mint, one of a type struck there 1775-91. Its divisions were the half, 1/5, 1/10 and 1/20 écu, struck in modest quantities. The écu was worth $1.10 in the USA before the Civil War. The écu au buste habillé is the most popular coin of Louis XVI among collectors. The 1789-Q is listed[1] about 50% higher than the most common date (1789-A) but it is not rare.
