This specimen was part of lot 71280 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), which sold for $219.60. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Septet of Sols (7 Pieces), 1789-90. Louis XVI. Grade Range: FINE to EXTREMELY FINE. 1) Marseille, EXTREMELY FINE. Environmental Damage. Ex: Gibbs & Eklund Collections. 2) Montpellier, 10.07 g. EXTREMELY FINE. Altered Surfaces. 3) Lille, 12.79 g. EXTREMELY FINE. 4) Lyon, 12.21 g. EXTREMELY FINE. Scratched. 5) Bordeaux, 10.79 g. FINE. 6) Toulouse, 11.76 g. VERY FINE. 7) Orleans, 10.47 g. EXTREMELY FINE. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS. From the Richard Margolis Collection" Altho this type was struck in considerable numbers 1777-91, the only dates known from the Marseille mint are 1787-91. Droulers[2] states the 1789-MA was struck in 1791 and backdated. Its face value was 12 deniers or 1/120 of an écu and was not demonetized in France until 1852.
