France 1789-H louis d'or
This specimen was lot 71003 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $1,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Louis d'Or, 1789-H. La Rochelle Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS EF-40. No doubt a specimen that spent some time in circulation far beyond the end of the monarch's reign, this specimen stands as a RARER and more difficult type to encounter. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Jorge Ortiz at the ANA in New York City on 27 August 1976 for $2.50)." A fairly scarce louis d'or à la tête nue from La Rochelle mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 4,081,749 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the French mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.
