SB925-71006r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71006 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $1,080. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Kingdom. Louis d'Or, 1789-W. Lille Mint. Louis XVI. PCGS Genuine--Tooled, Unc Details. Despite the noted tooling, this example offers a fairly crisp strike paired with a high degree of luster and engaging allure. From the Richard Margolis Collection (acquired from Hess in 1991 for $611.50). Ex: Hess (1/1991) Lot # 1546." A fairly common louis d'or à la tête nue from the Lille mint. 1786 is the peak year of issue for this type, with the Paris mint leading eleven mints with 4,081,749 examples. The years 1786-87 are common as the French mints melted down and reminted old tenor gold, but the later dates (1788-92) are much scarcer.

Recorded mintage: 79,951[2].

Specification: 7.65 g, 0.917 fine gold, 22-23 mm diameter, designed by Benjamin Duvivier.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 881, Dr/2 № 605, Fr-475; KM-591.15; Gad-361 (R).
