SB1123-71008r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71008 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 1/2 Real, 1862-Zs VL. Zacatecas Mint. PCGS MS-62. Inverted A for V. This alluring Mint State example glows with an impressive luster and handsome toning throughout." Zacatecas and Guanajuato were the two mints that made a serious effort to produce minor coinage for local use; the other mints preferred to concentrate on striking eight reales for export. Zacatecas half reales are known for 1826-63 and 1869 and this is a common date. Assayer VL served 1859-64.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.903 fine silver, .049 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM-370.11.
