Mexico 1878-Zs S 10 centavos

from the Stack's Bowers sale of the Kirk Menczer Collection, lot 71445

This specimen was lot 71445 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $85. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MEXICO. 10 Centavos, 1878-Zs S. Zacatecas Mint. NGC VG-10. Only example in NGC Census. From the Kirk Menczer Collection of Republican Decimal Minors." The Zacatecas mint struck this ten centavos with this design 1870-97. Several transitional designs were issued 1863-70, including one by the Maximilian regime, before settling on this type. It, in turn, was replaced by a ten centavos piece with a redesigned reverse in 1898. Most dates are common and overdates abound. This specimen is a slightly better date. The SCWC reports an 1878/7 overdate.

Recorded mintage: 30,000 including the overdate.

Specification: 2.70 g, 0.903 fine silver, 18 mm diameter, reeded edge.
