This specimen is the most common date of a series struck 1873-90 at the Durango mint, which closed in 1895. The SCWC records an 1890, 9/8 overdate in addition to the regular date. This twenty-five centavos piece replaced the two reales struck since colonial times. It, in turn, was replaced by a smaller 20 centavos piece in 1898.
