Shown is a balance scale peso, of a type struck 1869-1873. It was not a success in the export market, the destination for most of [[Mexico]]'s silver, so the type was discontinued in 1873 in favor of the resumption of the "cap and ray" eight reales. This specimen was lot 24436 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "MEXICO. Peso, 1873-PiH. NGC MS-62. SCARCER of the 2 assayers for this year. Second finest graded at NGC with none in mint state at PCGS. Slight weakness in strike as usual, soft stain luster and quite exceptional for this difficult to locate item. From the Alex Siegel Collection." This issue from Potosi is slightly scarce.
