Goldberg sale 84, lot 3651
Mexico G84-3651r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3651 in Goldberg sale 84 (Los Angeles, January 2015), where it sold for $1,821.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico. 20 Pesos, 1873-Mo M. Balance Scales. Only 5,600 minted. NGC graded AU-55." This expensive type would be even rarer were it not that many examples were hoarded as Mexican silver became overvalued. Finally, in 1905, the Diaz regime devalued the silver peso 50% and issued a new series of gold coins half the weight of their predecessors. Mintage figures are not a reliable indicator of rarity for this type due to the accidents of hoarding; many low mintage issues are readily available while other high mintage issues are very rare. This date is scarce.

Recorded mintage: 5,600.

Specification: 33.84 g, 0.875 fine gold, .952 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-119; KM-414.6.
