Ponterio sale 151, lot 8666

This specimen was lot 8666 in Ponterio sale 151 (Baltimore, November 2009), where it sold for $1322.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 8 Escudos, 1850 (5/4)-CaRG. SCARCE date. Small edge bump at 9 o'clock on reverse. Lightly cleaned ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." The Chihuahua mint struck eight escudos fairly steadily between 1841 and 1871. The date is given a 66% premium over the contemporary Guanajuato mint in the SCWC.

Many consider the Chihuahua mintmark to be common on pre-decimal issues but that is only true of the eight reales of the period 1874-95. Chihuahua half reals are known only for the years 1844-45 and the reals 1844-45 and 1855. No four reales are known to exist from this mint. The only gold issues are eight escudos 1841-71.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-67; KM 383.1.
