Spain SB816-21516r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21516 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $5,405. The catalog description[1] noted, "SPAIN. 4 Escudos, 1788-MM. Charles III (1759-1788). NGC MS-64. Madrid mint. The single finest graded at NGC and PCGS. An exquisite example with denticles so sharp and crisp they look like a 20th century product. Highly reflective fields that are just shy of prooflike, and free of major marks or abrasions. Booming yellow gold luster and central devices that are as strong as the periphery all combine to produce an extraordinary example of the type. A coin sure to see heated competition for ownership at this finest graded level." This type was struck 1786-88 and like all Spanish four escudos as distinct from Spanish colonial four escudos, is more available than eight escudos of the same period. It is distinguished by earlier issues of Charles III (1773-84) by being only 0.875 fine instead of 0.901 fine gold.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 13.54 g, 0.875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-12724, Fr-284; KM-418.1a; Cal-type-37#315.
