Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 566

This specimen was lot 566 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €500 (about US$660 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1788. Carlos III. Sevilla. C. 4 escudos. MBC/MBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Charles III, four escudos of 1788, Seville mint. Very fine or better.)"

This type was struck 1786-88 and like all Spanish four escudos as distinct from Spanish colonial four escudos, is more available than eight escudos of the same period. It is distinguished by earlier issues of Charles III (1773-84) by being only 0.875 fine instead of 0.901 fine gold.
