The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos III gold 4 Escudos 1788-FM, VF35 NGC, scarce type. Variety with upright initials. A bit weakly struck, but evenly worn and attractive." The second specimen was lot 31226 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "Charles III gold 4 Escudos 1788 Mo-FM XF Details (Scratches) NGC, Mexico City mint. Lustrous and well-detailed, with a few abrasions to the right of the bust, per the insert, yet still attractive. The scarcer subvariety of this date with the mintmark and assayer initials aligned with the rest of the reverse legend. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." The type was struck in Mexico 1773-88, and tho less rare than the "rat nose" type of 1762-71, is still expensive.
