This specimen was lot 3176 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2,300. The catalog description[1] noted, "1789 FM 4 escudos. Mexico City mint. EF-40 (NGC). Head of Carlos III to right, CAROL IV in legends around, date below/type as above. Medium gold with deeper orange highlights at the rims, a horizontal planchet flaw, as struck, at the top of the king's collar. A popular transitional type. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." This type was struck 1789-90 during the transition from Charles III (1759-88) to Charles IV (1788-1808) and, like all four escudos, is rare.
