Mexico 1789 8 reales rev DSLR.jpg

Shown is an 1789MoFM 8 reales of Charles IV, one of a type struck in Mexico 1789-90. This type, with the bust of Charles III but the ordinal of Charles IV, is transitional between the two rulers. As such, it commands a premium from type collectors even tho it is no rarer than other dates of the period. The regular issue (KM 106.2a) for 1789 is quite scarce. Assayer FM is recorded for the years 1783-1801. The dollar that George Washington allegedly threw over the Potomac could have been of this type.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13829, KM 107.
