This specimen is one of a series struck 1789-90 in Potosi at the beginning of the reign of Charles IV of Spain. As a transitional type, it bears the bust of Charles III and the name of Charles IV. Many of these pesos ended up being overstruck in Brazil for use as 960 réis.

Recorded mintage: unknown. Later dates, similarly priced, have mintages about 2-4 million.
