The second specimen was lot 71285 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $480. The catalog description[1] noted, "BOLIVIA. 4 Reales, 1789-PTS PR. Potosi Mint. Charles IV. PCGS VF-30. Although it is a somewhat circulated example of the type, this piece is otherwise problem-free and offers a handsome patina with some remaining luster. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Darwin Palmer Collection." This is an example of a type struck 1789-90 at Potosi, Bolivia, in the name of Charles IV but using the bust of the deceased Charles III. It was replaced in 1791 by the bust of Charles IV. Assayer PR is listed for 1776-95. Harris[2] notes that Potosi four reales of Charles III are the commonest mint, with twice as many as Mexico City. Recent hoard finds have only increased this number.
