Guatemala 1789 4 reales rev DSLR.jpg

Shown is a 1789 four reales from the new Guatemala mint, from a type struck 1789-90. In 1776, an earthquake demolished Antigua Guatemala (including the mint) and a new city was built some miles away. To mark the move, the mintmark was changed to "NG" ("Nueva Guatemala", still the capital of Guatemala) on all issues of 1777 and after. Harris[1] notes that Guatemala is the rarest mint for portrait four reales of Charles III; he counted over thirteen times as many Potosi four reales of the same type. This type, technically struck for Charles IV, bears the portrait of Charles III.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.896 fine silver, .389 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13691, KM 44.
