This specimen was lot 31028 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles IV gold 2 Escudos 1789 NG-M F12 NGC, Nueva Guatemala mint, Heavily circulated, yet quite bold at the legends and impressively problem-free, with no marks of any significance and attractive hints of reddish tone at the edges. A very rare date and denomination of which we've observed no recent sales. Ex. Caballero de las Yndias Collection. From the Santa Maria Collection." Two escudos are known from Guatemala for 1783, 1785, 1789-90, 1794 and 1797 in the eighteenth century. None are common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold.
