Sed37-1248r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1248 in Sedwick Auction 37 (Winter Park, FL, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU, Lima, gold bust 2 escudos, Charles IV transitional (bust of Charles III, ordinal IV), 1789 IJ, rare, NGC VF details / cleaned, ex-Almenara. Very weak bust due to concave flan (as made), the reverse more like XF or better with traces of luster around letters, any marks and hairlines arguably irrelevant at this grade level. Pedigreed to the Almenara Collection." This specimen was lot 1181 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 38 (Winter Park, FL, November 2025), where it sold for $1,200. This type was struck 1789-91 for the new king Charles IV. As there were delays in getting punches for the new bust out to the Latin American mints, the old hubs were used with the new king's name.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.875 fine gold, .190 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-14145, Cal-1255; Fr-38; KM-90.
