Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 21289
SB0123-21289r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21289 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,160. The catalog description[1] noted, "PERU. 8 Escudos, 1789-LM IJ. Lima Mint. Charles III. PCGS AU-55. Emanating from the final year of issue for Charles III, this lightly handled specimen radiates with great brilliance and some enchanting golden-olive tone. An enticing representative example. From the David Sterling Collection." Eight escudos were struck for Charles III and Charles IV in 1789, reflecting the slowness of news in the eighteenth century (Charles III died in January 1788). As there was no time to prepare designs depicting the new king, only the ordinal was changed.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13013, Fr-32; KM-82.1A; Cal-1954.
