Heritage sale 3032, lot 24514

This specimen was lot 24514 in Heritage sale 3032 (Chicago, April 2014), where it sold for $1,410. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Charles IV 8 Escudos 1789 P-SF, Popayán mint, XF45 NGC. Showing honest wear on the high points but no defects other than a minute lamination on the reverse at 1 o'clock. A decent type coin for this three year transitional type showing the Charles III bust and the CAROLVS IV legend." This type was struck 1789-91 at Bogotá and Popayán and is perhaps the most common Spanish colonial gold coin. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to 0.875 fine. Eight escudos in the name of Charles III (KM 50.2a) are also listed for 1789.
