This specimen was lot 11218 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,520. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1789/8-SF 8 Escudos. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-58 (PCGS). The 1789 8 Escudos of Popayán struck in the name of Carlos III are very scarce, and in this high grade they are significant rarities. This example is well centered, well struck, and thoroughly lustrous. Both sides are bright light yellow gold, with considerable reflectivity on the reverse. Only light handling is seen on the obverse, and scrutiny finds no noteworthy defects. Quite likely unimproveable. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Hans M.F. Schulman's sale of December 1969, lot 1537." This "standard bust" eight escudos, struck 1785-89, superseded the "rat nose" bust used at Bogotá 1762-71. The Popayán mint also adopted the new bust, dropping the old bust of the prior king, Ferdinand VI, used until 1771. The type marked a debasement from 0.901 fine to 0.875 fine gold.
