Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 310

This specimen was lot 310 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 3,600 € (about US$4,703 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "1789. Carlos III. Santiago. DA. 8 escudos. Last year of this reign. Minimal hairlines. Nice. Rare, especially in this condition. EBC+/S/C- [choice extremely fine to about uncirculated]." This design was used for the eight escudos of Chile 1772-89. Numista and the SCWC do not so state but the 1786-89 issues are almost certainly debased from 0.901 to 0.875 fine gold, as this was done at all the other Spanish mints.

Recorded mintage: 41,000 (including KM 42 for Charles IV).

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, 37 mm diameter, this specimen 26.94 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-13017, Fr-15, KM 27, AC-2178, Cal.Onza 951.
