This specimen was lot 397 in Ponterio sale 182 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $646.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Reales, 1789-DA. PCGS Genuine--Cleaning, Fine Details Secure Holder. Charles IV (1788-1808). RARE. 'CAR[O]L[U]S IV' with bust of Charles III. Peripheral toning and short planchet crack at 1 o'clock on reverse." Despite what seems to be a fairly substantial recorded mintage and nearly continuous production during 1773-89, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles III are almost as scarce as pillar dollars from that mint. This specimen is a transitional type issued at the beginning of the reign of Charles IV.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
