The first specimen was lot 1350 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $118. The catalog description[1] noted, "Santiago, Chile, bust 1/2 real, Charles IV transitional (bust of Charles III, ordinal IV), 1789DA. Fine with light old scratches on bust, light toning, good rims, scarce type." The second specimen was lot 1569 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $411.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHILE: Carlos IV, 1789-1808, AR ½ real, 1789-So, assayer DA, first issue with bust of Carlos III and ruler numbered IV before replaced by IIII, golden toning, NGC graded EF45, R." This type was struck at Santiago 1789-91 and is very scarce.

Recorded mintage: 186,000 (KM 28 and KM 35).

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.896 fine silver, .048 troy oz AGW, the first specimen 1.7 grams.
