Sedwick Treasure Auction 35, lot 1150
Sed35-1150r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1150 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Santiago, bust 1 real, Charles III, 1789 DA, NGC XF 40, finest known in NGC census. Deeply toned (good contrast) with dark spot behind head, bold strike but reverse slightly off-center, final date of scarce and desirable Charles III type." This type was struck steadily 1773-89 but is very scarce. The SCWC does not so note, but the fineness was reduced from 0.903 to 0.896 in 1786. A transitional one real (KM 36), with the bust of Charles III but the name of Charles IV, also exists for 1789. It is probably more common but is priced higher because of demand.

Recorded mintage: 109,000.

Specification: 3.38 g, 0.896 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Cayón-11444; Cal-527; KM-29.
