Chile 1789-So DA 2 reales KM-37
This specimen was lot 74086 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 2 Reales, 1789-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. PCGS VG-10. Type with bust of Charles III and with ordinal as IV. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1789-91. It isn't particularly rare but brings a premium as a transitional type, bearing the bust of the deceased Charles III but the name of Charles IV. This example realized four times the catalog value. The silver coinage was debased from 0.903 fine silver to 0.896 fine in 1785.
Recorded mintage: 67,000 including KM 30.
Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver.
