Chile SB120-20221r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20221 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $7,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Extremely Rare 1789 Charles III Santiago 8 Reales. One of Three or Four Known. The Calbeto Plate Coin. CHILE. 8 Reales, 1789/8-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles III. NGC EF-45. Mintage: Unknown. A long-recognized EXTREME RARITY in the series, struck posthumously for Charles III before the transition to Charles IV issues began later in 1789. Wholesome and attractive, this piece is regarded as the finest of the three or four examples confirmed, and is only piece certified. Sharply struck, the detail is virtually complete except where wear has softened the highpoints. The surface tone shows moderate depth and is smoothly placed with instances of multicolored hue here and there. Very few marks exist for the grade, with a small rim nick at 9 o'clock being the most notable. Truly a cornerstone coin for the Santa Fe collection and as a result, a coin that is destined to be the same in the next collection it enters. From the Santa Fe Collection. Ex: Amat Collection (Ponterio 3/1991) Lot # 81. Ex: Norweb Collection (Christie's 11/85) Lot # 624." Despite nearly continuous production during 1773-89, Santiago portrait eight reales of Charles III are almost as scarce as pillar dollars from that mint.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver.
