Aureo sale 243, lot 739

This specimen was lot 739 in Aureo y Calicó sale 243 (Barcelona, April 2012), where it sold for 1,100 € (about US$1,662 including buyer's fees). The catalog[1] noted,

"1790. Carlos IV. Santiago. DA. 8 reales. Busto de Carlos III. Ordinal IV. Leves rayitas en anverso. Pátina. Muy rara. (MBC+). (Eight reales of 1790, Santiago mint. Bust of Charles III but ordinal IV. Light marks on the obverse, toned, very rare, very fine plus.)"

This type was struck at Santiago 1789-91 and tho expensive, is not rare like prior types. It is the transitional type this the bust of Charles III but struck in the name of Charles IV. Later dates with the proper bust of Charles IV are considerably cheaper.

Recorded mintage: 147,000.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
