Aureo sale 238, lot 448

This specimen was lot 448 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 80 euro (about US$127 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1790. Potosí. PR. 8 reales. Busto de Carlos III. Ordinal IV. Escasa. MBC-. (eight reales of 1790, Potosí mint, bust of Charles III with ordinal IV. Nearly very fine.)"

A transitional type, bearing the bust of the deceased Charles III but bearing the name of Charles IV, was issued 1789-90. The assayer PR appears for 1776-95.

Recorded mintage: unknown but common.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
