Guatemala 1790-NG M 8 reales KM 45

Heritage sale 3022, lot 28141

This specimen was lot 28141 in Heritage sale 3022 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Carlos IV 8 Reales 1790/89 NG-M, XF details. Near-perfect details, with a small edge flaw, noticeable obverse scratch, and porous surfaces on both sides. The overdate is very scarce, and seldom appears at auction." This transitional type (with the bust of Charles III but with the name of Charles IV) was struck 1789-90 and is rare. Pesos dated 1790 with the proper bust of Charles IV (KM 53) exist but were likely backdated.
