This specimen was lot 75456 in Stack's Bowers June 2026 World Premier Collectors Choice Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2026), where it sold for $366. The catalog description[1] noted, "GUATEMALA. 1/2 Real, 1790-NG M. Nueva Guatemala Mint. Charles IV. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. Variety with "CAROLUS IIII" in legend and bust of Charles IV. From the Richard August Collection." In 1786, the fineness was secretly lowered from 903 thousandth to 896 thousandths. Assayer M served 1786-1836. The SCWC omits this date yet Cayón states it is more common than the half real struck with the old bust of Charles III (KM 41). This appears to be a local bust. Guatemala half reales of Charles IV are tied[2] with those of Lima in scarcity.
