This specimen was lot 41060 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $33,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Seldom Encountered Transitional Bust Type 8 Escudos. One of Only Two Numerically Graded Examples. GUATEMALA. 8 Escudos, 1790-NG M. Charles IV. NGC EF-45. Transitional bust type with the bust of Charles III, but in the name of Charles IV. The second finest certified on the NGC population report, only one finer (AU-50). This lightly circulated example boasts a strong strike with well-formed design features and even wear. When rotated in the light the luster amongst the devices pops out adding to its pleasing appearance. The fields exhibit signs of handling with marks and abrasions that one would expect from the designated grade. A handsome example of this tough to locate issue that is sure to see spirited bidding from many collectors. An example of similar quality sold in a Spanish auction in March 2024 where it hammered down for an impressive 44,000 Euro (Approximately $48,000) plus buyers fee." For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources.
