The first specimen was lot 24845 in Heritage sale 3016 (Orlando, FL, January 2012), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[1] noted, "Carlos IV gold 8 Escudos 1790 IJ, about VF, cleaned with some light scratches. Scarce transitional type featuring the bust of Carlos III." The second specimen was lot 2141 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $3,840. The catalog description[2] noted, "PERU. 8 Escudos, 1790-LIMA IJ. Lima Mint. Charles IV. NGC AU-55. Three-year type struck in the name of Charles IV, but with the bust of Charles III. An ever-popular type, this example boasts a strong strike with signs of handling consistent for the grade displaying even wear primarily contained to the high points and exposed areas. Attractive lustrous gold coloration with areas of pale orange tone amongst the devices and near the edges add to its pleasing appearance and eye appeal. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex: Christie's London auction, 26 November, 1981; lot # 528." This type is listed for Peru 1789-91 and is quite scarce. The fineness was lowered from .901 to .875 in 1785. Assayer IJ is recorded for 1787-1803.
