Stack's Bowers October 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74128

This specimen was lot 74128 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/2 Real, 1790-So DA. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. PCGS FINE-12. Type with bust of Charles III and with ordinal as IV. From the Richard August Collection." This type was struck 1789-91. It isn't particularly rare but brings a premium as a transitional type, bearing the bust of the deceased Charles III but the name of Charles IV. The silver coinage was debased from 0.903 fine silver to 0.896 fine in 1785.
